The first “mole” that will dig one of the two tunnels of the 6th metro line is heading towards the station where it will begin its drilling work, Metrorex announces.
The first giant TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) drilling machine – or “mole” as it is informally called – will drill one of the two tunnels of the 6th line on the SOUTH Section, the project from 1 Mai station to Tokyo station (Complex Comercial Băneasa).
The machine is heading towards the future Tokyo subway station starting tonight, according to Metrorex.
“For a huge, oversized machine such as the TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine), the preparations involve successive stages, starting with the transport to the starting point of the tunnel excavation (the future Tokyo subway station), continuing with the assembly of the component parts of the “mole”, which is done in the space specially arranged for this process and ending with the moment when the machine can begin the actual activity, digging the tunnel, 24 hours a day”, announces Metrorex.
“Starting tonight, March 3-4 this year, throughout the entire current week, the component parts of the TBM will be transported. The mechanical shield, the cutting head, which weighs 128 tons, is among the first parts to arrive at the future Tokyo subway station,” the company announced, specifying that the assembly of the component parts “will begin next week and will take approximately one month.”
Line 6 will provide a direct connection from Gara de Nord to Otopeni International Airport. On a 14.2 km route, it will include 12 metro stations: Pajura, Expoziției, Piața Montreal, Gara Băneasa, Băneasa Airport, Tokyo, Washington, Paris, Brussels, Otopeni, Ion I. C. Brătianu, Henri Coandă International Airport.
